Does The State Owe You Money?

Hundreds of millions of dollars are sitting in a state bank account. Some of that money could be yours. It is unclaimed cash and it's turned over to the state when the owners can't be found.

Thomas Archer was on the unclaimed money list. He received $1284.49. The money was held in escrow by his mortgage insurance company. The company tried to return the money, but they had the wrong address. Last month Archer got a letter from his congressperson telling him about the unclaimed money.

North Carolina treasurer Richard Moore told Eyewitness News he wants to get the word out about a lot of money that the state has that may belong to you.

"Over the years we have accumulated more than 300 million dollars and that fund continues to grow.

Last year, for instance we took in more than 30 million and only gave about 8 million back, " Moore said.

That means companies turned over 30 million dollars in unclaimed money to the state last year and only 8 million of the unclaimed money went out to its rightful owners.

The unclaimed money does not go to waste. The interest is used to provide North Carolina students with grants and loans for higher education.
