Action 9: Failure To Register Warranty Leaves Woman Without A Laptop

POSTED: 3:39 pm EDT May 17, 2007
UPDATED: 6:19 pm EDT May 17, 2007

Charlie Davis is thankful to have a brand new laptop computer to replace her old one that broke.

Davis’ other laptop was just over a year old when her daughter told her it stopped working.

“She said, ‘Mama, the computer won't come on; I got to get my homework done,’" Davis said.

She had paid more than$800 for the laptop, plus another $100 for an extended warranty -- all from office depot.

"I have insurance on it, so I say I take it back, let them either fix it or replace it," Davis said.

But when she went to Office Depot, they told her she didn't have an extended warranty because she'd not registered it.

Davis admits at the time of purchase, Office Depot instructed her to register the warranty.

"To tell you the truth, the man at the store told me he was going to help me do all this stuff because I didn't know about registering everything, you know,” she said.

Not only did she not register her warranty, but Davis also made the mistake of not holding onto her original purchase receipt, and she had to go dig up a bank receipt.

Office Depot told Action 9 it was not obligated to assist Davis, but the manager at the South Tryon Street store said he understood the value of great customer service and gave Davis a new laptop at no charge, including an extended warranty.

Davis says she'll register this time.

"I'm very happy I didn't lose the money I put into it, so I'm very happy," she said.

The lesson is when buying electronics don’t just toss aside the paperwork. Register the product in the first 30 days so the manufacturer has you on fire for warranty purposes. Then put the original receipt and owner’s manual together in a safe place in case you need them later.
