Doree from Charlotte asks: Why is the Summer Solstice on the 20th this year, not the 21st?
Thanks for sending your email to Severe Weather enter 9. Nope you aren't necessarily wrong. The summer solstice occurs on one of a three day span between the 20th-22nd of June. Since our years aren't always 365 days, this causes the summer solstice date to float. The reason that it is not always on the same day, is due to leap years. This year had an extra day in Feb, that throws off the day of the solstice. Not all leap years have the solstice on the 20th though. There actually is a complicated cycle with regard to the solstice date. We will see the solstice on the 20th again in 2012.
