2009 Ford F-150

Quick Facts:
  • Revised chassis is lighter, yet more rigid.
  • Cab features more than 30 storage compartments.
  • "Platinum" series offers premium luxury.
  • Fleet-wide fuel economy improves by 1 mpg over 2008 lineup.

The Ford F-150 continues to be one of the most popular vehicles sold in the United States, so it's no small task to redesign the truck.

Ford engineers started by revamping the chassis of the truck. The new frame is 10 percent more rigid than the previous truck, while being more lightweight, which helps improve fuel economy and performance.

Inside, the cab has been stretched by six inches, giving the folks inside more room to move around, and more room for storage. In all, there are more than 30 storage compartments built into the interior.

The 2009 F-150 will be available in three cab styles, four truck bed options and seven trim levels. At the high end of the spectrum is the new Platinum series, which features 10-way adjustable captains chairs upholstered in leather and other luxury features.

Under the hood, there are three V-8 choices, in either 4.6-liter or 5.4-liter sizes. Ford says the fleet average fuel economy of the new trucks has improved by 1 mpg over the previous lineup.

In 2010, Ford plans to introduce a diesel and gasoline turbo versions of the truck.
