Gas Goof Leads To Long Lines, Arguments

Pumps Sell Gas For $1.40 Per Gallon

Wednesday, June 25, 2008 – updated: 12:47 pm EDT June 25, 2008

It was the kind of error a sport utility vehicle owner would dream about.

On Tuesday night, a Marathon station that was supposed to be selling gas for $4.10 a gallon had a few numbers mixed up, Cincinnati television station WLWT reported.

The pumps were set at $1.40 a gallon for regular unleaded.

Quickly, a nearby road backed up as drivers lined up to get to the pumps before someone was able to correct the error. The traffic problems compounded as cars started blocking the ramps from Interstate 71.

"The biggest problem was people blocking up the exits. They kept cutting, and then everybody was jammed in here and nobody could get out, so then the police came," customer Rhonda Wilkie said.

After almost three hours, deputies suggested to the station attendants that they shut down the station until they could fix the error, and they did.

That didn't go over well.

"I got right up to the pump and I didn't even get both of my cans filled up," Wilkie said.

"They said you told them to shut it down!" one driver yelled at a passing deputy.

It's not yet known if a worker made a mistake or if there was a computer error, but an attendant told another station that he couldn't fix the error or contact his manager.
