Dr. David Hunter began his career in Charlotte as a mathematics instructor at the Carver/Mecklenburg College. When Mecklenburg College closed in 1963-64, he became an instructor at Central Piedmont Community College.

To our knowledge, Dr. Hunter was the first African-American instructor at an institution of higher education in North Carolina. He served as the Chairman of the Mathematics Department at CPCC, the Dean of Arts and Sciences, and the Vice President of General Studies. Although Dr. Hunter retired from CPCC in 1995, he still provides a tremendous value to various special projects at the College.

In 2003, Dr. Hunter received the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Medallion Award. He also received the National Council on Black American Affairs Distinguished Service Award in 1996.

Dr. Hunter earned his B.S. in Mathematics from Johnson C. Smith University. He also earned an M.S. in Mathematics from Atlanta University and completed his doctorate from Nova Southeastern University.
