NCAA Game Summary - West Virginia At St. John's

POSTED: 3:46 pm EST March 8, 2008

(Sports Network) - Joe Alexander recorded a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds as he led the West Virginia Mountaineers to an 83-74 overtime win against the St. John's Red Storm in Big East Conference play at Madison Square Garden.

Also coming up with a double-double for the Mountaineers (22-9, 11-7 Big East) was Da'Sean Butler who scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as well, adding a team-best five assists as the team closed out the regular season with back- to-back wins. Alex Ruoff chipped in 15 points.

The Red Storm (11-19, 5-13), losers of two straight and seven of the last eight games, were paced by Larry Wright with a career-high 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting behind the three-point line, followed by Anthony Mason and D.J. Kennedy with 17 and 10 points, respectively.

WVU shot not only 54.5 percent from the field in the first half, but also converted 5-of-8 out on the perimeter in order to claim the seven-point advantage at the break.

Needing a late push to knot the game at 68-68 and send the contest into overtime, the Mountaineers watched Joe Mazzulla race the length of the floor and convert a layup with three-tenths of a second remaining in regulation.

In the bonus period Alexander left no doubt for the visitors as he tallied seven points in the nine-point win.

St. John's made a miserable 7-of-18 at the free-throw line on the afternoon, compared to 30-of-42 for WVU.
