Thursday, March 13, 2008
Las Cruces, NM -- (Sports Network) - Reggie Larry scored 26 points to lead Boise State to an 80-74 victory over Hawaii in the quarterfinal round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. Tyler Tiedeman netted 14 points for Boise State (23-8), which will take on the top-seeded Utah State in the semifinal round. The fourth-seeded Broncos also got 10 points from Matt Nelson in the victory. Matt Gibson and Riley Luettgerodt both had 17 points for Hawaii (11-19), which also got 14 points from Jared Dillinger. Bill Amis added 10 points for the fifth-seeded Warriors, who closed the campaign on a seven-game losing skid. Boise State turned the ball over 15 times in the first half, and Hawaii owned a 35-27 advantage at the break. The Broncos connected on only 6-of-18 field goal attempts in the frame. Larry shot 7-of-10 from the floor over the final 20 minutes en route to 16 second-half points. His Broncos opened the second stanza with a 12-2 run and closed the game with a 15-of-18 performance from the foul line over the final four minutes to seal the victory. Boise State has never won the WAC Tournament and entered Thursday's game with a 6-6 record all-time at the event. The seven-game slide for Hawaii is the longest for the program since the 1995-96 campaign. Also, the team has suffered through its first losing season in nine years. Boise State has now beaten Hawaii in all three meetings this season. The Broncos finished the regular season with a 12-4 mark against WAC opponents, good for a four-way tie atop the standings. Because of disadvantage in tie-breakers, Boise State was relegated to the fourth seed. Hawaii was 7-9 against conference foes during the regular season.
