NCAA Game Summary - New Mexico At California

Thursday, March 20, 2008

(Sports Network) - Jamal Boykin sank a pair of free throws with 3.7 seconds remaining to lift the California Golden Bears to a 68-66 win over the New Mexico Lobos in the first round of the 71st annual NIT at Haas Pavilion.

Boykin was one of four players to score in double figures for the Bears (17-15) as he tallied 10 points off the bench. Leading the way for the home team was Ryan Anderson with 26 points, followed by Jerome Randle and DeVon Hardin with 11 and 10 points, respectively. With the victory fourth-seeded Cal will now face Ohio State in the second round on Monday night.

The fifth-seeded Lobos (24-9) were paced by J.R. Giddens who tallied 26 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.

The Bears shot just 2-of-10 behind the three-point line in the first half, yet still maintained a 37-29 advantage at the break.

In the second half the home team made a total of just seven field goals, yet converted 15-of-22 opportunities at the charity stripe to secure the narrow win.

Giddens, who tied the game at 66-66 on a layup with 51.6 seconds to play, had a chance to tie the game after the free throws by Boykin, but his jumper just inside the three-point line at the buzzer missed the mark.

In addition to shooting just 7-of-25 behind the three-point line on the night, New Mexico cost itself a possible win with a mere 9-of-20 effort at the charity stripe, compared to 22-of-31 for California.
