NCAA Game Summary - Maryland At Syracuse

POSTED: 9:49 pm EDT March 20, 2008

(Sports Network) - Jonny Flynn scored 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting and doled out seven assists to lead the Syracuse Orange past the Maryland Terrapins, 88-72, in the second round of the NIT.

Paul Harris added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Orange (21-13), who advanced to face the winner of the Akron-Massachusetts matchup in the quarterfinals. Donte Green chipped in 16 points and Arinze Onuaku 14 to match his 14 boards. Syracuse hosted a first-round matchup with Robert Morris on Tuesday and posted an 87-81 victory. After Thursday's win, the Orange are 14-12 all-time in the NIT.

James Gist poured in 23 points and hauled in 11 rebounds for the Terrapins (19-15), who dropped four of the season's final five games. Bambale Osby gave 21 points in defeat. Maryland was forced to play its first-round game on the road, traveling to Minneapolis to take on Minnesota. The Terrapins posted a 10-point win at Williams Arena (68-58) and, after Thursday's defeat, fell to 11-6 in NIT play.

The lead see-sawed until a Greene layup closed the door on eight unanswered Syracuse points, which put the Orange on top 61-54 midway through the second stanza.

Syracuse pulled away from there and led the remainder of the contest.

Two buckets from Gist and a layup from Braxton Dupree put the Terps up 13-6 about 5 1/2 minutes in.

A 12-0 Syracuse run put the Orange on top 38-30 with just over two minutes to go before the break. Greene and Flynn sparked the run with back-to-back threes, and Harris closed it out with a pair from the line.

Maryland pulled within 40-38 by halftime.
