NCAA Game Summary - Tulsa Vs. UAB

POSTED: 6:32 pm EDT March 13, 2008

(Sports Network) - Jerome Jordan scored 23 points and pulled down 17 rebounds as Tulsa used a late surge to top UAB, 78-68 in overtime, in a Conference USA quarterfinal.

Ben Uzoh poured in 21 points for the Golden Hurricane (19-12), who advance to face UTEP in the semifinals on Friday. The Miners slipped by Houston, 80-77, on Thursday.

Robert Vaden scored 15 points and dished out four assists for the Blazers (22-10), who were knocked off despite being the second seed. Reggie Huffman posted 14 points and 10 boards in a losing cause.

Uzoh's layup with 2:50 to play in the extra session broke a 64-64 tie and sent the Golden Hurricane on a 14-4 run to end the game. After several desperation three-point heaves by the Blazers fell short, Ray Reese and Rod Earls converted their free throws down the stretch to ice the win.

UAB began the contest with an 11-4 burst ending on Howard Crawford's tip-in a little less than seven minutes in. Tulsa struck back to tie, 17-17, on Jordan's jumper with 9:28 to play in the half, then went up by four, 21-17 when Reese nailed a jumper a little more than a minute later.

However, the Blazers ended the half with a 16-6 run to take a 33-27 lead to intermission after Jeremy Mayfield completed a three-point play with under a minute remaining.

A pair of Brett McDade free throws completed Tulsa's 10-4 run, which forged a 37-37 tie 3:09 into the second half, but a Vaden three on the next possession gave UAB the lead once more. Vaden then hit a jumper just after the midway point to put the Blazers up 49-44, but UAB struggled to maintain control.

Later, McDade's three with 3:02 remaining in regulation knotted the game at 58-58, and after each team failed to convert down the stretch, Jordan hit a jumper with 34 seconds to play and put Tulsa up 60-58. Vaden responded with a short-range jumper with four seconds to go, sending the game into overtime.
