NCAA Game Summary - Albany At Duke

POSTED: 11:37 pm EST December 17, 2007

(Sports Network) - DeMarcus Nelson scored 23 points to lead Duke, and the sixth-ranked Blue Devils overwhelmed Albany, 111-70, at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Jon Scheyer scored 18 and Brian Zoubek finished with 13 points and seven rebounds for Duke (10-0), which scored the most points it has this season since the opener, a 121-56 dismantling of N.C. Central.

Taylor King scored 17 for the Blue Devils, who shot 57 percent (15-of-26) from three-point range, and 60 percent (38-of-63) overall.

Tim Ambrose led Albany with a game-high 24 points, but the Great Danes (5-5) lost their fourth game in five outings. Brian Connelly scored 12, and Brian Lillis finished with 10 points and six boards for Albany, which did have a 36-31 rebounding advantage.

"We wanted to make sure we came out here and played to our standards," Nelson said. "Obviously we feel like we still could've done some things better defensively, rebounding, and on the free throw line. But offensively I think we executed really well. It just comes from a great week of practice."

Up by three a little less than four minutes into the game, Duke used a 14-3 run to set the tone for the game. Greg Paulus, Nelson, and Nolan Smith hit threes in the stretch, and King capped the run with a layup, giving Duke a 21-7 lead with 12:46 left in the first half.

The Blue Devils used a similar outburst later in the half to up their lead to 20 points. With six and a half minutes remaining, King and Scheyer made back- to-back threes, kicking off a 12-4 run that took a little more than two minutes.

Scheyer had six points during the spurt, and David McClure made 1-of-2 free throws with 4:14 left to put Duke ahead 43-21. It continued that way for the rest of the half, and the Blue Devils took a 57-31 lead into the break.

"When you break down against Duke, especially this Duke team, they make you pay," Albany coach Will Brown said. "They have so many guys that can put the ball in the basket. They're bringing guys in off the bench that are getting 17 and 18 in King and Scheyer. They just make you pay for every mistake."

Five minutes into the second half, Scheyer had consecutive buckets to put the Blue Devils on top 72-42. With 8:37 left in the game, King connected on a three for a 91-50 Duke lead, and the Blue Devils continued to cruise.

Game Notes:

Duke extended its home winning streak against non-conference opponents to 57 games, which is the longest in the NCAA...Duke committed just eight turnovers, but forced Albany into 21 of them...It was the teams' first ever meeting.
