NCAA Game Summary - Arkansas Vs. North Carolina

POSTED: 9:34 pm EDT March 23, 2008

(Sports Network) - Wayne Ellington scored 20 points, and North Carolina, the NCAA Tournament's top overall seed, rolled into the Sweet 16 with a 108-77 rout of Arkansas.

Tyler Hansbrough had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Tar Heels (34-2), who move on to face fourth-seeded Washington State in an Eastern Regional semifinal in Charlotte on Thursday. Deon Thompson scored 16 points, and Ty Lawson had 19 points for UNC, which won its 13th straight.

"I guess we expected the game to be a little closer, but I think when you look back and look at some of the things that we did out there, we made it tough for them to make a run back at us," Tar Heels guard Marcus Ginyard said. "I think it speaks for our team and the way we played today."

Sonny Weems -- who exploded for 31 points in the first-round win over Indiana -- scored 19 points for ninth-seeded Arkansas (23-12). Darian Townes had 15 points and nine rebounds, and Patrick Beverley scored 14 points for Arkansas.

Just like in their opening-round destruction of Mount St. Mary's the ACC regular season and tournament champions opened Sunday's game with a big run and never looked back. The Tar Heels registered the second-most points in NCAA Tournament history in their 113-74 win on Friday, and flirted with that number on Sunday.

Despite the blowouts, Hansbrough knows the Tar Heels still have room for improvement.

"I think there's some advantages, but also I think we take some things from these games," Hansbrough said. "I think defensively, Coach really wants us to improve and get some stops. I think we can take some things from these games and definitely work on them."

North Carolina scored the first nine points of the game, part of an 18-4 run. Lawson drained two three-pointers on the push, and added another jumper as the Tar Heels built an early 14-point edge.

"It's real tough to fall behind against a team like Carolina," Weems said. "They have great players and great post players and guards. They shot the ball real well tonight. Once we got down, it was hard for us to put together a run, and they are a great team, so compliments to them."

After the Razorbacks managed to pull within 20-9 on a Weems dunk with 13:19 left, the Tar Heels went running again. UNC's 15-2 burst, capped by a Thompson dunk, put Arkansas in a 35-11 hole with just under nine minutes remaining in the half.

The Tar Heels kept putting on the pressure, and led 51-26 at the intermission.

The Razorbacks were no more successful in keeping pace with UNC in the second half than they had been before the break. Carolina shot a sizzling 73.5 percent from the field in the second half, actually improving on their 61.3 percent performance before the break.

The Tar Heels edge hovered around 20 points until they pulled even further away, thanks to a 15-3 burst. Hansbrough capped the run with a dunk, and the Tar Heels lead reached 33 points at 87-54 with 8:34 remaining.

The 108 points was the most allowed by an Arkansas club in a tournament game.

UNC breezed to the finish line from there, as the raucous crowd -- stocked with Tar Heels fans who made the short trip from Chapel Hill -- celebrated a trip to the Sweet 16. The Tar Heels improved to 7-1 in tourney games played in Raleigh, and 23-1 in games in their home state.

They'll get a chance to improve on that mark on Thursday against the Cougars, who are also coming off of two blowout wins in the tourney's opening weekend.

Game Notes:

Alex Stepheson added 10 points for Carolina...The Tar Heels, who are making their 40th all-time appearance in the "Big Dance", own a 94-38 record in the event...The Tar Heels edged in front in the all-time series, 4-3.
