Anaheim, CA -- (Sports Network) - Scott Cutley had 22 points, 12 rebounds and five assists as Cal State Fullerton captured the Big West title with an 81-66 win over UC Irvine.

Josh Akognon had 23 points and five boards while Frank Robinson added 12 points for the Titans (24-8), who captured this tournament for the first time since 1978, which was also the last time the team went to the NCAA Tournament.

Darren Fells had 21 points and 10 boards and Michael Hunter added 14 points for the Anteaters (18-16), who were in the title game for just the third time in school history.

With the score tight in the first half, the Titans took a 14-6 lead on nine unanswered points with Ray Reed capping the surge on a slam with a bit over 14 minutes to play.

The Anteaters trimmed their deficit to seven points on a pair of free throws from Fells to make it a 26-19 game with a shade over six minutes left in the first half.

Cal State, though, kept it from getting any closer and took a 37-27 lead into the locker room.

The Titans continued to keep the lead in the second half and made it a 50-36 game on consecutive buckets from Cutley, with the last coming with a bit over 13 minutes to play in the game.

UC Irvine scored eight straight points to cut the deficit to 55-46 after Patrick Sanders put in a layup with under nine minutes to play.

Akognon, though, responded with a three-pointer to key an 8-1 run and Cal State Fullerton held on for the win.
