Wednesday, December 29, 2004
Lexington, KY -- Randolph Morris poured in a career-high 25 points on 11-of-14 shooting, as eighth-ranked Kentucky rolled to an 82-50 victory over Campbell at Rupp Arena. Kelenna Azubuike chipped in 14 points for the Wildcats (9-1), who have won five in a row. Kentucky head coach Tubby Smith recorded his 200th victory at the school (200-53). "He was moving well, running the floor better," said Smith of Morris. "When he puts his mind to it, and he's hungry, he's pretty hard to stop." Anthony Atkinson netted 14 points for the Fighting Camels (2-7), who suffered their fourth consecutive setback. Comerlee Poole collected nine points and nine rebounds for Campbell. The Wildcats, who never trailed, scored 13 of the first 15 points of the game. Morris' dunk 4:41 into the contest staked Kentucky to an 11-point lead. The Wildcats continued to pour it on and Ravi Moss' follow-up with just under eight minutes left in the first half increased the advantage to 28-4. Azubuike's dunk with 2:19 remaining made it 38-7. Kentucky eventually carried a commanding 45-11 lead into the locker room. Morris finished with 12 points in the first half for the Wildcats, who converted 19-of-35 shots from field, including 5-of-13 from beyond the arc. Azubuike and Patrick Sparks each added eight points in the opening 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the Camels never got over the hump, as they missed 24 of their first 27 field goal attempts and ended the first half just 5-of-30 from the floor. "When you go to the half 45-11, it's pretty much match, set, point," said Campbell coach Robbie Laing. Campbell then opened the second half with a 17-4 burst, highlighted by Atkinson's four-point play, to pull within 49-28 with 12:55 remaining. The Camels later cut the deficit to 51-33 on a basket by Russ Gibson with 10:46 left. Kentucky responded with a 17-7 spurt, culminated by Rajon Rondo's dunk, to push the margin back to 28 at 68-40 with 5:23 remaining. Campbell did not threaten again. "There were times when they just overwhelmed us with their physical stature inside," added Laing. "It seemed we were moving sideways all night."Game Notes:Chuck Hayes contributed nine points and 11 rebounds for Kentucky...This was the first-ever meeting between the two teams...The 11 points in the first half marked the fewest points allowed by Kentucky in the opening half since December 20, 1983, before the shot clock era began, when the Wildcats held Cincinnati to seven...Kentucky improved to 6-0 at home this season and 6-2 all-time versus current members of the Atlantic Sun Conference...Only three other coaches have totaled 200 wins at Kentucky -- Adolph Rupp (876), Joe B.
