Campbell Renews Contracts Of Basketball Coaches

Thursday, May 25, 2006

(Sports Network) - Campbell University announced the renewal of multi-year contracts with head men's basketball coach Robbie Laing and head women's basketball coach Wanda Watkins on Thursday.

In his fourth year at Campbell, Laing's Fighting Camels broke school records for scoring, three-point field goals made and attempted and rebounds to finish as the second-highest scoring team in Division I during the 2005-06 season.

Laing was also named the Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year after Campbell improved to 9-11 in Atlantic-Sun play a year after going winless in 22 games.

Watkins, meanwhile, has coached the Lady Camels for 25 seasons, compiling a record of 401-288 while guiding Campbell to its only NCAA tournament berth in 2000. Watkins is one of just 57 coaches in college womens basketball history to reach the 400-win plateau.

"We are pleased to extend our agreements with Coach Watkins and Coach Laing," said Campbell University director of athletics Stan Williamson. "These are certainly exciting times in the life of our University, and this measure will ensure that both will coach our teams when we move into the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center in the fall of 2008."
