Centenary (2-2) Vs. Rhode Island (2-2)
GAME NOTES: In order to decide the fourth and sixth place finishers in the annual Top of the World Classic, the Centenary Gents and the Rhode Island Rams face off in the first action of the day from the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. After losing to Troy in the first round of the event on Thursday night, 84-78, the Rams bounced back on Saturday to take out host school Alaska- Fairbanks by a scant 77-73 score. As for the Gents, they too lost their first game at the Carlson Center on Friday night to Utah State in a 77-71 decision. Yesterday the squad blitzed Southeast Missouri though in an 83-51 blowout to advance to the final day of action.
Larry Logan recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds in leading the Gents to their lopsided victory over SEMO on Saturday. Also scoring in double figures for the Gents were Tyrone Hamilton with 15 points, along with Chase Adams and Jerrald Bonham with 10 apiece for a team that shot 50.8 percent from the field and an impressive 10-0f-22 beyond the arc, not to mention holding a 41-31 edge on the glass. Over the course of the previous three games, prior to Saturday's action, Alexander Starr shined brightest for the Gents with his 14.3 ppg on 63.6 percent shooting from the field. But Starr, who scored just six points on Saturday, is much more than just a scorer with a nice touch, averaging 6.3 rpg and 3.7 apg to the mix as well. At the defensive end of the floor, Starr was being credited with three steals per game. Logan, another of the hot shooters for Centenary at 68 percent, adds 13.7 ppg as the only other player in double digits. He also complements Starr quite well on the boards, checking in with 5.7 rpg.
Ahead by 13 points at the break, Rhode Island actually had to hold off a second-half rally by the Nanooks in order to take the narrow four-point decision on Saturday. Will Daniels was one of four players to score in double figures for the group with his 22 points, followed by Kahiem Seawright with 14, Jon Lucky had 13 and Joe Mbang tallied 11. Daniels also paced the group on the glass with nine rebounds, helping URI to capture a 45-30 edge on the glass against AK-Fairbanks. Through the first three games, the Rams were being led in scoring by Seawright who was responsible for 18.3 ppg. Not only was he shooting 57.7 percent from the field, but the big man was also connecting on 83.3 percent of his free-throw attempts as well. As if that were not enough, Seawright was also one of the nation's leaders on the glass with close to 13 rebounds per outing. What's been most impressive about his effort is that he's averaged almost as many offensive rebounds (6.0) as he has defensive boards (6.7). Another three-game starter leading up to Saturday's contest, Daniels was responsible for 16.0 ppg, adding 5.7 rpg for good measure.
Both teams have some explosive players, but in the case of the Gents they have Starr who was held in check on Saturday which means he'll probably want to make a strong showing on his way out the door at the Carlson Center.
