NCAA Game Summary - Charlotte Vs. Temple

POSTED: 11:38 pm EDT March 14, 2008

(Sports Network) - Mark Tyndale finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds, as Temple knocked off Charlotte, 60-45, in the semifinals of the Atlantic-10 Tournament.

Chris Clark added 13 points for the Owls (20-12), who advanced to Saturday's final against Saint Joseph's, which beat top-seeded Xavier earlier Friday. Temple's win sets up an all-Philadelphia championship game, as the schools are separated by a handful of miles.

Temple split a pair of games with St. Joe's this season, each being decided by a single point. The most recent game came on March 2, a 57-56 Owls win.

Leemire Goldwire had 18 points, though shot only 5-of-18 from the field for Charlotte (20-13), which had a five-game win streak snapped. Lamont Mack finished with 11 points and seven rebounds for the 49ers.

Sixth-seeded Charlotte rallied from an 18-point second-half deficit to defeat Massachusetts on Thursday, but couldn't pull off a similar feat Friday.

Temple held a nine-point lead at halftime, and expanded its edge to 36-21 after a Tyndale three-point play, and a Dionte Christmas three-pointer came back-to-back less than three minutes into the second half.

The Owls maintained a double-digit margin until Charlie Coley made a layup, and Goldwire drained a three, to cut Charlotte's deficit to 38-30 with 13:47 remaining.

The teams traded baskets until a Coley layup brought the 49ers within six with a little more than nine minutes left. Then, with 7:09 left, Goldwire made another three to cut Temple's edge to 44-39.

But a staunch Temple defense held Charlotte to two field goals the rest of the way, staving off a 49ers comeback. After Goldwire's three, the Owls scored seven points to re-establish their double-digit advantage.

Ryan Brooks made a jumper, Tyndale a three, and Lavoy Allen another jumper to push Temple's lead to 51-39 with 3:23 on the clock. The margin was big enough for the Owls to hold, as Charlotte only got as close as nine the rest of the way.

The Owls held the 49ers to just eight points through the first 10 minutes of play, and took a 19-8 edge after Clark made a three in transition. Temple then coasted into halftime with a 28-19 lead.
