Chattanooga (17-11) At UNC Greensboro (16-11)
GAME NOTES: The Chattanooga Mocs and the UNC Greensboro Spartans both go gunning for a third straight win tonight, as they collide in Southern Conference play at Fleming Gym. The Mocs wrapped up the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, defeating Wofford by an 82-76 score. It was the second triumph in a row for Chattanooga, which improved itself to 17-11 overall and 12-6 in conference play. The team though, now returns to the road, where it has gone just 3-5 against conference foes. As for UNCG, it kicked off a three- game homestand with a 75-67 victory over the College of Charleston on Monday. The win was the second straight and third in four games, as the Spartans stepped up to 16-11 overall and 10-8 within the league. In terms of the all- time series, Chattanooga holds a 13-8 edge over UNCG and it captured a 78-73 victory in the first encounter of the season.
The Mocs hit on 53.8 percent of their field goals and 7-of-20 from three-point range, as they slipped by Wofford on Saturday. The squad forced 14 turnovers and outscored Wofford in the paint by a 38-22 margin. Stephen McDowell and Khalil Hartwell each tallied 19 points to lead the charge, while Marcus Watts had 13 points and seven helpers. For the season, McDowell leads Chattanooga in scoring at 15.1 ppg and he is shooting 38.3 percent from long range. Nicchaeus Doaks has provided a nice complement to him with 14.1 ppg and a team-high 7.2 rpg, while Kevin Bridgewaters contributes 10.0 ppg and 3.2 apg. As a unit, the Mocs have fared well on offense and the boards, scoring 77.4 ppg and outrebounding their foes by 6.0 rpg.
The Spartans forced just 11 turnovers, but they were able to generate 20 points off those miscues in a win over the College of Charleston this past weekend. UNCG shot a solid 54.3 percent from the field and that included an 8- of-16 showing from three-point land. Mikko Koivisto led the way with 25 points, while Kyle Hines logged 23 points and eight boards. Kevin Oleksiak also had a big game, finishing with 22 points and three steals. For the season, Hines has clearly been the squad's go to guy, as he paces the Spartans in scoring (19.4 ppg), rebounding (9.4 rpg) and steals (46). Oleksiak is a distant second with 11.6 ppg and he dishes out 3.3 apg, while Koivisto chips in with 10.9 ppg. UNCG, as a whole, is turning in 71.6 ppg behind 46.0 percent shooting from the field this season.
UNCG has fared well at home and with Hines dominating the paint, it should be able to deliver a win in front of its fans tonight.
