Chattanooga (17-12) At Elon (11-17)
GAME NOTES: Southern Conference foes are set to close out the regular season tonight in North Carolina, as the Elon Phoenix welcome the Chattanooga Mocs to Alumni Gym. The Mocs own a 17-12 overall record and sport a 12-7 SoCon ledger. The club has won two of its last three decisions, but found itself on the wrong end of an 87-64 rout at UNC Greensboro on Thursday night. As for the Phoenix, they have dropped two of their last three, including a hard-fought 81-77 verdict to UT-Martin last Saturday. Elon fell to 11-17 on the season with the loss, and dropped to 9-10 in league action. Chattanooga holds a slight 5-4 advantage over Elon in the short-lived series.
Chattanooga shot just 41.7 percent from the field, including 5-of-19 from long range, in Thursday's 23-point loss at UNC Greensboro, and the Mocs committed a horrendous 28 turnovers from which the Spartans tallied 39 points. The Mocs managed to control the glass by a 41-33 margin, but converted just 9-of-16 from the charity stripe and allowed UNCG to shoot 47.4 percent from the field. Marcus Watts paced the Mocs with 22 points and six rebounds, while Nicchaeus Doaks added 17 points in the losing effort. Stephen McDowell and Doaks represent the lone Mocs with a double-digit scoring average to this point in the season, as the duo nets 14.7 and 14.2 ppg, respectively. Doaks also pulls down a team-best 7.1 rpg, and a respectable 46.3 percent shooting effort as a team has helped the Mocs average 76.9 ppg.
Elon puts up just 63.6 ppg, as the Phoenix are shooting only 43.1 percent from the floor as a team, including 32.0 percent from beyond the arc. Ola Atoyebi leads the club in both scoring (12.8 ppg) as well as on the glass (6.1 rpg), while Brett James has been responsible for 12.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Montell Watson rounds out a trio of double-digit scorers, with his 10.7 ppg. The Phoenix shot a vanilla 44.1 percent from the field, including a miserable 8-of-25 from long range, during last Saturday's loss to UT-Martin. The Phoenix committed 15 turnovers, and sent the Skyhawks to the charity stripe 33 times, from which they scored 26 points. Watson scored 20 points and dished out seven assists to lead Elon in the losing effort, while Brett James added 18 points to go with seven boards. Ola Atoyebi chipped in 11 points off the bench, and Adam Constantine hauled in a game-high 15 rebounds for the Phoenix.
Chattanooga may be just 3-7 on the road this year, but the Mocs are still the superior team here. As long as they can limit turnovers and control the glass, the visitors should earn themselves another victory over Elon.
