Elon (12-18) Vs. Chattanooga (18-12)
GAME NOTES: The Elon Phoenix and Chattanooga Mocs meet for the second time in a week, only this encounter takes place in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Tournament. The Mocs swept the regular season series from the Phoenix, including a narrow 57-56 win in both teams finale last Saturday. With the win, Chattanooga claimed a share of the North Division title with Appalachian State at 13-7. The Mocs won the tie-breaker with Appalachian State and were awarded the second seed and a first round bye in the tourney. Chattanooga has had great success in this event, going 48-21 all-time, including nine titles. As for seventh-seeded Elon, it was able to recover from its loss to Chattanooga by downing 10th-seeded Furman, 52-37, in the first round on Friday. With the win, the Phoenix have now advanced to the quarterfinals of this event four times in five appearances. The winner of this game will earn the right to take on either the College of Charleston or Georgia Southern in the semifinals on Sunday.
Elon turned in a tremendous defensive performance on Friday, as it not only forced 18 turnovers, but it also held Furman to a dismal 23.3 percent shooting effort from the field. Offensively, the Phoenix were paced by Brett James, who put forth 16 points and five rebounds. Montell Watson added 10 points and five helpers, while Ala Atoyebi scored seven points and snared a team-high 10 caroms. For the season, Atoyebi and James are tied for the team-lead in scoring at 12.4 ppg, with Atoyebi pulling down a club-best 6.2 rpg and James collecting 5.3 rpg. Watson chips in with 10.9 ppg and he has been in charge of running the offense, handing out a squad-high 3.6 apg. As a whole, the Phoenix are scoring 63.0 ppg, while holding opposing teams to 65.8 ppg.
The Mocs have fared well at the offensive end of the court, where they are netting a solid 76.2 ppg behind 46.2 percent shooting from the field. Stephen McDowell leads the team in scoring at 14.5 ppg, and he is also good defender, racking up a club-high 40 steals. Nicchaeus Doaks nips at his heels with 14.2 ppg and he is shooting an efficient 58.6 percent from the floor. Doaks is also pulling down a team-high 7.1 rpg, helping Chattanooga outrebound its opponents by 5.9 rpg for the season. The solid play on the boards has played a part in the team's ability to overcome its 17.5 turnovers per game.
Chattanooga is the more rested team here and its fresh legs and ability to control the boards should come in handy in a win tonight.
