Morgan, No. 12 Spartans Cruise In Opener

East Lansing, MI -- (Sports Network) - Raymar Morgan recorded a double-double with a career-high 25 points to go along with 15 rebounds, as 12th-ranked Michigan State pummeled Chicago State, 86-53, in the opening round of the East Lansing Regional of the CBE Classic at the Breslin Center.Chris Allen scored 13 points for Michigan State (1-0), which is coming off a 23-12 season. Drew Neitzel netted 12 points and dished out eight assists, while Durrell Summers chipped in 12 points off the bench. The Spartans will take on UL-Monroe, which beat Northern Michigan earlier in the day, in the regional championship game on Wednesday. David Holston had 18 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Cougars (0-2). Chidozie Chukwumah and John Cantrell added 10 points apiece. Mike Wilson's three-pointer with 11:25 left in the opening frame put Chicago State ahead 15-14. However, it turned out to be the final time the Cougars would be in possession of the lead. The Spartans countered with a 31-11 run to close out the stanza and head into the break with a comfortable 45-26 cushion. Morgan deposited 11 points during the spurt along with six points apiece from Allen and Kalin Lucas. The Spartans coasted to the final buzzer, outscoring Chicago State 41-27 in the second half. Michigan State shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the floor, including a sizzling 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from beyond the arc. Conversely, the Cougars shot only 28.6 percent (18-of-63) from the field. Game Notes Michigan State leads the series, 2-0. The two teams squared off last season with the Spartans winning by an eight-point margin, 69-61...Michigan State has won 30 of its last 31 season openers.
