UConn's Price Has Torn ACL

POSTED: 3:19 pm EDT March 22, 2008

(Sports Network) - Connecticut point guard A.J. Price reportedly suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in the Huskies' 70-69 overtime loss to San Diego in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Hartford Courant reported Saturday that Price, UConn's leading scorer with an average of 14.5 points and 5.8 assists per game this season, will have surgery to repair the injury, and will need at least six months of rehabilitation.

Price sustained the injury with 9:39 left in the first half when he went airborne on the way to the basket and came down awkwardly. Price was down for a few minutes before being helped to the locker room by teammates.

The junior later returned to the court with the aid of crutches and sat on the bench with ice on his knee as fourth-seeded UConn was upset by 13th-seeded San Diego.

A unanimous first-team All-Big East selection, Price hopes to be 100 percent by the time the Huskies begin practicing again in October. The point guard has already missed two seasons of his collegiate career. He sat out the 2004-05 season after a near-fatal brain hemorrhage, and was suspended for the 2005-06 season after alleged involvement in the theft of four laptops.
