Wisconsin-Green Bay (1-1) Vs. Delaware State (2-1)
GAME NOTES: A couple of teams trying to rebound from a loss meet in the consolation round of NIT Season Tip-Off tonight, as the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix tussle with the Delaware State Hornets at Value City Arena. The Phoenix opened play in this Midwest Regional on Monday by dropping a 91-68 decision to host Ohio State. It was certainly a disappointing showing by UWGB, which kicked off its 2007-08 campaign with a 76-75 win over Oakland on Friday. As for DSU, it took on Columbia in its opening round game, losing a low scoring affair, 47-41, last night. The loss was the first of the season for the Hornets, who defeated Allen University (77-44) and St. Paul's College (70-69) prior to entering this tournament. Tonight's game marks the first ever meeting between DSU and UWGB on the hardwood.
The Phoenix made good on just 36.9 percent of their shots from the field, as they suffered a lopsided loss to Ohio State last night. The team also struggled from long range (7-of-28), and it didn't have much success on defense either, allowing Ohio State to shoot 52.2 percent from the field. Mike Schachtner paced the team in defeat with 17 points and four rebounds. It was yet another strong effort by Schachtner, who led UWGB with 23 points and seven rebounds in a season-opening win over Oakland. After scoring 14 points in the opener, Rahmon Fletcher was limited o just eight points on a poor 3-of-10 shooting from the field last night.
The Hornets struggled with their shot all game long, as they hit on just 32.6 percent from the field in a loss to Columbia last night. The squad didn't have much success from behind the arc (4-of-15) either, although it did convert a perfect 9-of-9 attempts at the foul line. Marcus Neal was the only player on the team to reach double figures, as he finished with just 10 points. It was decent effort by Neal, who was averaging just 3.0 ppg coming into this tournament. The biggest surprise, though, was Columbia's ability to shutdown Roy Bright, who had scored a total of 58 points in the team's first two games. Last night, Bright made just 2-of-10 shots from the field, as he finished with only eight points to go along with six rebounds.
DSU was a bit more competitive last night, but that was probably due to its playing the lesser of the competition. Still, the Hornets are a decent team and with a big rebound game from Bright, they should be able to post the win in this one.
