Fresno State (13-16) At Utah State (20-9)
GAME NOTES: The Utah State Aggies put their perfect home record on the line tonight as they host the Fresno State Bulldogs in Western Athletic Conference action at the Smith Spectrum in Logan. The Aggies have won all 16 of their home games this season, with an 86-59 triumph over Louisiana Tech on Thursday night being perhaps the easiest of those victories. USU has now won two in a row and is 9-4 in conference play, compared to 5-9 in league action for the Bulldogs. On Saturday night, FSU lost for the fifth time at home this season with a 69-64 setback to New Mexico State. The loss snapped a brief two-game win streak for the Bulldogs, who have just two road wins in a dozen opportunities this season. USU won the first meeting of the season at the Save Mart Center back on February 7th by a 77-72 final, which means the Aggies now lead Fresno State by a count of 22-19 in the all-time series.
Kevin Bell scored a team-best 23 points and handed out seven of the team's 14 assists two nights ago, but he and the rest of the Bulldogs could not hold off NMSU at home. Eddie Miller converted 6-of-10 shots behind the three-point line to come up with his 21 points, but 19 turnovers and just 3-of-7 shooting at the charity stripe for the squad was more than enough to send them into the loss column. Bell continues to do it all for the Bulldogs with his team-best 18.3 ppg and 174 assists, the latter accounting for just under half of the entire team's production so far in 2007-08. Miller, who is shooting 41.5 percent from three-point range, checks in with 15.3 ppg, which means he and Bell are responsible for almost half of the club's 69.4 ppg this season.
Jaycee Carroll made just 1-of-6 from three-point range on Thursday night versus LaTech, but all that means is that he ended up 12-of-14 from the rest of the field as he tallied 30 points. Gary Wilkinson accounted for 19 points and 10 rebounds and Tai Wesley 16 points and seven boards, while Kris Clarke again put his own scoring on hold to hand out nine assists as the squad shot an incredible 67.3 percent from the field, in spite of only 2-of-10 behind the three-point line. The leading scorer in the WAC, Carroll is clearly the most dominant shooter in the conference with his 22.3 ppg, resulting from 53 percent shooting from the floor, 50.3 percent out on the perimeter and 91.7 percent at the charity stripe. Until Wilkinson (13.2 ppg, 6.8 rpg) stepped up his play it was Carroll who also paced the group on the glass and is still posting 6.1 rpg for good measure. The Aggies are one of the top shooting teams in the nation at 51.1 percent and they have converted 78.7 percent at the charity stripe as well.
With some extra time to rest the Aggies must be chomping at the bit to get back to action and defend their unblemished home mark, which is bad news for the visiting Bulldogs.
