Furman (7-21) At College Of Charleston (13-16)
GAME NOTES: Southern Conference foes will close out their regular season tonight, as the College of Charleston Cougars host the Furman Paladins at John Kresse Arena. It's been a frustrating campaign for the Furman, as it comes into tonight's clash with a miserable 7-21 mark, which includes a 6-13 ledger in SoCon play. The Paladins have, however, found moderate success of late, winning three of their last five, including a 73-63 final at The Citadel on Thursday night. Things have been somewhat better in Charleston, as the Cougars own a 13-16 overall tally and stand at 8-11 in league action. The club has struggled lately, however, dropping three of its last five. The Cougars did, however, manage to pull out a 91-86 victory against Georgia Southern on Thursday to snap a three-game slide. Furman leads the all-time series between these two rivals by a 40-29 margin, which includes a 74-66 victory over the Cougars earlier this year.
The Paladins connected on 51.0 percent of their attempts from the field during Thursday's 10-point win over The Citadel, which included a 9-of-19 effort from beyond the arc and a 14-of-19 performance at the charity stripe. The Paladins made up for 10 turnovers with a dominating 39-23 rebound advantage, and Furman held the Bulldogs to just 42.6 percent from the floor during the contest. Justin Dehm scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace Furman in the win, while Jordan Miller tallied 11 points to go with five boards off the bench. George Brozos and Alex Opacic added 10 points apiece for the Paladins. Furman is shooting just 40.8 percent from the floor as a team this season, and as a result averages a mere 62.2 ppg. Opacic, with his 10.8 ppg, leads the club in scoring, and he is joined in double figures by Dehm (10.6 ppg).
The College of Charleston is shooting a respectable 45.4 percent from the floor this season, and averages a solid 72.4 ppg. The club boasts four players with double-digit scoring averages, beginning with Andrew Goudelock and his 13.6 ppg. Tony White Jr. checks in with 13.3 ppg, while Jermaine Johnson paces the Cougars on the glass (8.6 rpg) and tallies a commendable 11.6 ppg. Dustin Scott also owns a double-figure average, netting 10.1 ppg to go with 6.5 rpg. The Cougars buried 12-of-21 tries from beyond the arc and shot 50.0 percent from the floor during Thursday's victory over GSU, forcing 17 turnovers and converting 21-of-33 at the foul line. Goudelock scored 18 points to lead CofC in the win, while Scott tallied 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Cougars. Johnson added 13 points, while White and Donavan Monroe chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Furman has been just miserable on the road this season (1-12), so give the advantage to Charleston at home. The Cougars are also a much better offensive club, and the Paladin defense should have its hands full from the opening tip.
