NCAA Game Summary - Davidson Vs. Georgetown

POSTED: 8:27 pm EDT March 23, 2008

(Sports Network) - Stephen Curry did it again, this time exploding for 30 points -- 25 in the second half -- and 10th-seeded Davidson rallied from 17 down in the second half to shock Georgetown, 74-70, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Jason Richards scored 20 points for the Wildcats (28-6) who will carry the nation's longest winning streak -- 24 games -- to Detroit to take on third- seeded Wisconsin in a Midwest Regional semifinal on Friday. Andrew Lovedale scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Southern Conference champions, who reached the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1969.

Jessie Sapp scored 14 points for the Hoyas (28-6) who, just a season removed from a Final Four run, didn't survive the tourney's opening weekend. Jonathan Wallace added 12 points for the Big East regular season champs, who saw center Roy Hibbert's time limited to 16 minutes due to foul trouble.

Hibbert finished with six points, one rebound, and one blocked shot for Georgetown, which led by 17 points early in the second half, only to see its season come to an end.

Curry, the son of former NBA star Dell Curry, erupted for 30 points in the second half of Davidson's first-round win over Gonzaga, and again strapped the Wildcats to his back on Sunday.

A DaJuan Summers three-pointer pushed the Hoyas ahead 46-29 with 17:52 left in the second half, and Davidson looked all-but done.

The Wildcats responded with a 21-6 push, though, slicing deep into Georgetown's lead. Hibbert picked up his fourth foul midway through the run, and Curry converted a rare four-point play and added another three on the burst, which pulled Davidson within 52-50.

Sapp nailed a three to push the Hoyas ahead 57-52, but Curry answered with a trey of his own, and again it was a two-point game. Max Gosselin sank two free throws to tie the game at 57-57 with 5:06 left, but Chris Wright made one at the line to put the Hoyas back on top.

Curry took over, however, scoring eight straight Davidson points, and his three pushed the Wildcats up 65-60 with 2:55 left.

"Their offense, we knew at that point in the game, everything they did was going to be good and ran through him (Curry)," said Wallace. "They set a lot of screens for him and he was in constant motion and (we) tried to force him to make tough shots, but he makes tough shots."

The Hoyas were able to cut back to within 69-67 after a Summers dunk with 25.3 seconds left, but Curry made five free throws in the last 25 seconds, keeping Davidson's upset secure.

"I thought it was pretty balanced from half to half the way they defended us, and I guess me individually," said Curry. "But I just wanted to keep running and just keep cutting and getting stops ... because the first half was more halfcourt oriented, and the second half, we got stops and rebounds and open- court plays."

Down four in the final seconds, Georgetown resorted to a desperation three by Sapp, which clanged hard off the iron, sealing the Hoyas' fate.

Curry was largely absent during the first half, and the Hoyas built a sizeable edge. Georgetown led 17-15 after a Curry jumper midway through the half, but the Hoyas outscored the Wildcats 21-10 down the stretch to take a 38-27 lead into the intermission.

Game Notes:

Summers finished with 10 points for Georgetown...The Wildcats won despite shooting only 38.6 percent from the field, to 63.4 percent by the Hoyas. The Wildcats improved to 7-10 all-time in the tourney...The Hoyas had beaten Davidson in the only two previous meetings.
