GAME NOTES: The sixth-seeded Georgia Bulldogs have overcome enormous odds to reach the SEC Tournament title game, and they are set to do battle with the second-seeded Arkansas Razorbacks this afternoon in Atlanta. This tournament was being held at the Georgia Dome, but a severe storm damaged the facility on Friday night, causing Georgia's quarterfinal matchup with Kentucky to be postponed until Saturday. The venue was switched to Alexander Memorial Coliseum, the home of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and Georgia had the unenviable task of potentially playing two tournament games in the same day. After beating Kentucky by a 60-56 final, the team immediately turned its attention to a semifinal matchup with Mississippi, a top seed, later that evening. Surprisingly, Georgia had enough energy to knock off MSU, 64-60. The 'Dawgs hope to win just their second SEC crown, as the first and only title came way back in 1983. As for Arkansas, it took on Florida in last year's SEC Tournament title game, and the result was a lopsided 77-56 defeat. The Razorbacks won this tournament back in 2000 for the first and only time. They managed to knock off top-seeded Tennessee yesterday by the slimmest of margins in a 92-91 final, potentially costing the Vols a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs beat the Razorbacks, 82-69, in the only regular season meeting, but Arkansas owns a 14-9 series advantage.

Georgia won only four SEC games during the regular season, so the fact that the Bulldogs have beaten three league foes over a three-day span has certainly been unexpected. Most casual college basketball fans would not be able to name a single player on the Georgia roster. Still, SEC opponents are well aware of Sundiata Gaines and his tremendous all-around ability. The standout guard is averaging 14.9 ppg to go with 6.1 rpg, 132 assists and 57 steals. He gets some help from the team's other two double-digit scorers, Billy Humphrey (12.2 ppg) and Terrance Woodbury (10.7 ppg). In the semifinal win over Mississippi State, Gaines scored 20 points on the strength of a 4-of-7 showing from three-point range and a 6-of-6 effort from the foul line. Albert Jackson contributed 12 points for the 'Dawgs, who earned a 46-33 rebounding advantage and limited MSU to 32.8 percent field goal efficiency.

Arkansas is scoring 74.2 ppg this season while allowing 67.1 ppg to the opposition. The Razorbacks are led in scoring by Sonny Weems, who is netting 14.3 ppg. Patrick Beverley checks in with 12.4 ppg and 6.8 rpg from his guard position, and Darian Townes is posting 11.8 ppg. Center Steven Hill averages only 16.4 minutes per contest despite having started 28 of the team's 32 games. Hill is only averaging 4.6 ppg this season, but he came through in the clutch yesterday. In the closing seconds, Hill caught the ball in the post and hit a turnaround jumper to lift the Razorbacks to the thrilling upset of Tennessee. Those two points were the only two scored by Hill, who played 10 minutes off the bench. Charles Thomas had 24 points and 10 rebounds in a reserve role, while Beverley contributed 17 points. As for Townes, he netted 16 points for the Hogs.

Yesterday, Georgia played two games in the same day for just the second time in program history and the first time since 1930. So will the Bulldogs have enough to knock off Arkansas? Probably not, as the Razorbacks have been extremely impressive with back-to-back wins over top competition.

Predicted Outcome

Arkansas 78, Georgia 67
