San Diego, CA -- (Sports Network) - De'Jon Jackson scored 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds and third-seeded San Diego completed an improbable run, clinching an NCAA Tournament berth with a 69-62 win over top-seeded and 20th- ranked Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference Tournament final.Freshman Rob Jones went for 15 points and six boards, while Gyno Pomare added 14 and 10 as the Toreros (21-13) ended Gonzaga's run of WCC Tournament championships at four straight. USD upended second-seeded Saint Mary's late Sunday night to reach the tourney title game, and again took advantage of the opportunity to play on its home court with its second upset in 24 hours. San Diego head coach Bill Grier worked as an assistant under Gonzaga head coach Mark Few before taking the USD head job prior to this season. Jeremy Pargo led Gonzaga (25-7) with 22 points, but the Bulldogs were outrebounded 36-26 and allowed San Diego a key second-half run that cost them the conference's automatic NCAA bid. The 'Zags, the conference's regular season champion with a 13-1 record, still appear to be in good position for an at-large bid, but became only the second Bulldogs team in the past 10 seasons to not come away with the tournament championship. USD led by three at the half, only to see its advantage whittled away by an early second-half Gonzaga spurt. But the Toreros responded with a 15-6 spurt of their own, capped by a long three from Jackson, and held a 49-45 lead with about 11 minutes left. Jones scored inside to push the Toreros edge to 55-47, with just over seven minutes to go, and the freshman hit a pair of free throws less than a minute later to increase the margin to double digits. Gonzaga pulled within six after Pargo made two foul shots and Abdullahi Kuso converted a tip-in to make it 61-55 with just over two minutes to go. But Kuso had a potential dunk off a dish from Austin Daye slapped away by Pomare, and Pargo missed on the front end of a one-and-one with about 50 seconds remaining. Those missed opportunities proved costly, as Jackson hit a pair of free throws and Pomare got behind the Gonzaga press for a slam, giving San Diego a 65-57 advantage with just under 30 ticks to go. Pargo did all he could to will the Bulldogs to victory, but simply ran out of time, and Trumaine Johnson provided the exclamation point with a breakaway slam in the waning seconds. Johnson finished with 10 points, while Toreros point guard Brandon Johnson scored nine and grabbed eight rebounds just one night after leading San Diego to a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Saint Mary's by scoring 28. No other Bulldog ended up in double digits, with Kuso totaling nine points and Josh Heytvelt the next-highest scorer with eight and three rebounds. Gonzaga raced out to an early 13-6 lead, but the Toreros stormed back to within 15-12 after Chris Lewis powered inside for a bucket just ahead of the 10-minute mark. Jones scored off a dish from Pomare to trim the margin to 23-21 with just under four minutes left in the half, and Pomare's putback capped a 14-4 USD run that gave the Toreros a 30-25 advantage. San Diego's lead was 30-27 at the break, but a 12-4 run to start the second half had Gonzaga back up 39-34 with more than 15 1/2 minutes remaining. Game Notes San Diego also ended Gonzaga's previous string of four consecutive tournament championships, stopping the Bulldogs in the 2003 WCC championship...Gonzaga made 50 percent of its field goals, while USD shot 41 percent (25-for-61).
