NCAA Game Summary - Kansas Vs. Stanford

Saturday, December 6,

Matt Lottich scored 18 points, including a pair of key three-pointers down the stretch, as No. 17 Stanford knocked off top- ranked Kansas, 64-58, in the John Wooden Classic.

Chris Hernandez added 11 points and Joe Kirchofer scored 10 for the Cardinal (4-0), who ended the Jayhawks' brief stint atop the national rankings.

Aaron Miles led Kansas (3-1) with 11 points, followed by Keith Langford and Wayne Simien, who scored 10 apiece.

The Jayhawks, who vaulted to No. 1 after the nation's top four teams lost last week, trailed from the opening basket until Langford's three-point play gave them a 46-45 advantage with less than 9:00 to play in the game.

But the lead was short-lived.

Lottich responded at the other end with a three-pointer, giving the Cardinal a 48-46 edge with 8:05 to play. That touched off a 7-0 Stanford run, capped by Hernandez's free throws at 6:24, which made it a 52-46 game.

Kansas responded with an 8-2 burst, pulling even at 54-54 when Simien made a pair of free throws with 4:26 remaining. Lottich was 2-of-2 from the line at the other end to restore Stanford's lead at 56-54, and then drained a three with 2:27 left to give the Cardinal a 59-55 cushion.

Kansas was never closer than that the rest of the way.

Stanford more or less dominated the first half, leading all the way from the game's first bucket, a three-pointer from Lottich less than a minute into play.

Kansas was within 13-11 six minutes later, but the Cardinal set out on a 14-4 run for their biggest lead of the stanza. Kirchofer capped the burst and gave Stanford a 27-15 advantage with 5:50 remaining in the half.

The Jayhawks pulled as close as 32-29 when Bryant Nash's free throws capped a 14-5 spurt with under a minute to play, but Stanford ended the half with four straight points and led 36-29 heading into the locker room.

Game Notes:

Kansas lost for the first time in three appearances in the Wooden Classic...The Jayhawks still lead the all-time series, 8-2.
