Hofstra (11-16) At Delaware (12-15)
GAME NOTES: The Hofstra Pride hits the road for the final time in the regular season as it challenges the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at the Bob Carpenter Center tonight. Trying to fight through a disappointing 2007-08 campaign, the Pride are actually riding their longest win streak of the season after topping Iona over the weekend in an 81-63 decision. The victory was the third in a row and the fourth in five games for Hofstra, which closes out the season with a home date versus Drexel on Saturday afternoon. As for the Blue Hens, they too came out on top on Saturday as they topped Toledo in a 77-69 decision on the road. The win snapped a brief two-game slide for a Delaware squad that is an even 8-8 in CAA action this year. With respect to the all-time series between these two schools, the Pride holds a 42-22 advantage and is 10-3 since the two programs joined the CAA. Hofstra won the first meeting of the season earlier this month with a 64-58 decision at home.
He may not have been the top scorer for the Pride against Iona over the weekend, but Antoine Agudio was again the center of attention with his 24 points as he moved within 10 of becoming the program's all-time leading scorer. Although just a freshman, Charles Jenkins took scoring honors for Hofstra with a career-high 28 points and also cleared 10 rebounds to set a personal-best as well. Agudio, the sixth player to score at least 2,000 points in his career with the Pride, now has 2,212 points which places him second with the school behind only Steve Nisenson who tallied 2,222 points in only three years in the 1960's. A three-point threat every time he touches the ball, Agudio now has 77 baskets from long range this season, giving him 350 for his career to establish a new school and conference record. Among the nation's leaders in scoring, Agudio is posting 22.8 ppg, followed by Jenkins with 15.2 ppg.
Marc Egerson was one of four starters to score in double figures for the Blue Hens in their win over Toledo on Saturday, but more than just his team-best 22 points on 5-of-6 shooting behind the three-point line, the guard also collected 12 rebounds and handed out six assists, both of which also paced the group. Herb Courtney dropped in 18 points, Brian Johnson had 12 and Alphonso Dawson tallied 11, which means the only starter left out of double-digits was Jim Ledsome who scored just four points in 34 minutes for a team that shot 58.7 percent from the field. Egerson, who now has two double-doubles on the season after missing the first seven contests, is averaging 13.4 ppg and is first on the glass with 6.8 rpg. Courtney accounts for 13.7 ppg and 5.9 rpg and Dawson adds 10.7 ppg and 4.7 rpg. However, Johnson (9.5 ppg) might be the most important factor on the unit, seeing as how he leads the group with 139 assists, representing 45 percent of the team's dishes this season.
Agudio's inevitable landmark basket will certainly be a high point of the game for the Pride, but that doesn't necessarily translate into a victory.
