Matthews And Marquette Cruise Past IPFW

POSTED: 11:25 pm EST December 17, 2007

(Sports Network) - Wesley Matthews scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds and 10th-ranked Marquette overcame a sluggish first half to pull away from IPFW, 80-56, at the Bradley Center.

Dominic James had a game-high 17 points and six assists and Lazar Hayward added 14 to go with eight boards for the Golden Eagles (8-1), winners of four straight following their lone setback, a 77-73 loss to Duke November 21 in the Maui Invitational.

David Cubillan scored 11 and Jerel McNeal went for seven points and seven rebounds for Marquette, which shot 48 percent from the floor to help overcome a 12-for-23 performance at the foul line.

Jaraun Burrows posted a team-high 13 points off the bench for IPFW (4-6), which has lost four of five.

Demetrius Johnson contributed 12 points and seven rebounds, but the Summit League representative got no more than seven points from any other player en route to a second straight stumble against a Top 10 opponent.

IPFW fell to ninth-ranked Michigan State, 79-57, on Saturday.

The Mastodons were within three with 10 1/2 minutes to go in the first half following a Ben Botts jumper, but Marquette scored the next nine, with Matthews' jumper at the 5:31 mark making it 22-10. The scoring see-sawed for the rest of the half, and the Golden Eagles led 29-18 at the break.

IPFW stayed close for the first five minutes of the second half before Marquette gained some cushion by locking down defensively. A 33-14 Golden Eagles run was capped by a layup from Matthews with just under eight minutes to go, extending the lead to 66-40, and the Mastodons never threatened again.

Game Notes

IPFW shot just 33.8 percent (23-for-68) from the floor, and was outrebounded 45-31...McNeal and James each had uncharacteristically poor nights from the free-throw line; McNeal made just 1-of-5 and James was 1-for-4...Marquette has won both meetings between the two schools, and the Mastodons are now 0-7 all- time against Big East opponents.
