Las Vegas, NV -- (Sports Network) - Grant Maxey scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, lifting the Jackson State Tigers to a 74-70 win over the Iona Gaels in the seventh-place game of the Las Vegas Invitational. Jeremy Caldwell came off the bench to score 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting for the Tigers (1-5), who finally get into the win column after five losses to start the season. Darrion Griffin chipped in with 12 points, and Chris Hyche scored 11. De'Shaune Griffin scored 14 points to pace four Iona (0-6) players in double figures. Milan Prodanovic tallied 11 points, while Kevin Hassett and Dexter Gray each scored 10. Jackson State struggled from the free-throw line in the first half (7-of-15) and shot just 1-of-6 from three-point range, but the Tigers remained stingy on defense and found themselves with a 34-29 halftime advantage. Iona hung around with a few timely three-pointers in the second stanza (6- of-12), but the Gaels were plagued by turnovers down the stretch. In all, Iona committed 26 turnovers for the game. Jackson State picked up the win despite shooting just 21-of-37 (56.8 percent) from the charity stripe.
