NCAA Game Summary - Jacksonville At Georgetown

Sunday, December 9, 2007

(Sports Network) - Austin Freeman scored 15 points and DaJuan Summers and Chris Wright each added 14, as fifth-ranked Georgetown rested many of its key players during an 87-55 rout of Jacksonville at the Verizon Center.

Roy Hibbert played just 15 minutes and scored eight points, while Jessie Sapp added eight with eight rebounds in 20 minutes of action. The Hoyas (7-0) shot a season-high 58.9 percent in beating up the overmatched Dolphins, as no starter played more than 22 minutes.

"We, more so than at any time since I've been here, have depth and quality depth at the guard spot," said Georgetown head coach John Thompson III. "They talked last year about how deep we were and it was just up front. We weren't deep at all. With the group we have this year...they all have different strengths and different weaknesses."

Ben Smith and Andre McMillan scored nine apiece to lead Jacksonville (3-6), which has lost six straight after winning its first three games. The Dolphins shot just 33.9 percent overall.

Jacksonville led 5-4 early, but Georgetown followed with eight straight points to take control. A layup by Hibbert gave the Hoyas the lead for good before Freeman and Sapp connected on three-pointers.

Georgetown continued to expand the advantage and opened a 22-9 cushion on a layup by Patrick Ewing Jr. with just under eight minutes to play in the first half. The lead reached 15 on a three by Summers with 3 1/2 minutes left and the Hoyas took a 39-21 margin to the break.

The Dolphins never threatened in the second half.

Georgetown scored 14 of the first 17 points after the intermission, building a 53-24 lead on a three-pointer by Jeremiah Rivers just five minutes into the second half. The Hoyas went on to lead by as many as 37 and Jacksonville got only as close as 25.

The Hoyas made 11-of-24 three-point tries, while the Dolphins connected on just 4-of-17 from beyond the arc.

"Give them credit, making 11 threes is quite an accomplishment," said Jacksonville head coach Cliff Warren about Georgetown. "If they can do that throughout the year, they'll be back in the Final Four."

Game Notes:

Georgetown is 7-0 for the first time since the 2003-04 season...The Hoyas will next play on Saturday against Radford before visiting second-ranked Memphis on December 22...The only previous meeting between Georgetown and Jacksonville ended in a forfeit by Georgetown on December 18, 1969. A punch thrown by one of the Georgetown players led to fights in the stands and both teams were sent to the locker room just before the first half ended. The Hoyas would not come out for the second half and the game went into the record books as a 41-26 Jacksonville victory.
