Kansas' Chalmers Declares For Draft

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

(Sports Network) - Kansas junior Mario Chalmers declared for the 2008 NBA Draft on Wednesday, though will not hire an agent, making him eligible to return to the university if he takes his name out.

Chalmers was the Jayhawks' second-leading scorer at 12.8 points per game, and leader in three-point percentage (.468) this past season in helping Kansas win the NCAA Tournament.

His defining moment perhaps came in the national championship game, when he made a game-tying three-pointer with 2.1 seconds left in regulation. The Jayhawks went on to beat Memphis, 75-68, in overtime.

Chalmers was named the most outstanding performer for the Final Four, adding to a list of accolades that includes three All-Big 12 selections.

"This has been an unbelievable three years for me at Kansas," Chalmers said. "I appreciate all the love that the fans, my teammates and coaches have shown me. It has been a great honor to be a part of this University, to be part of such a great team and to win a national championship."

The championship win capped a 37-3 season that set a school record for wins. Two other members of that team, Brandon Rush and Darrell Arthur, had already declared for the draft on April 17, though Arthur also said he will not hire an agent. Rush declared for the draft last season, and is not eligible to return.
