Ford Leaving UMass For Oklahoma State?

POSTED: 1:31 pm EDT April 16, 2008

(Sports Network) - A week after deciding to remain the head coach at Massachusetts, Travis Ford may be heading to Oklahoma State.

Ford turned down an offer from Providence to stay at UMass, but he has met with Oklahoma State officials and numerous reports, including one from Oklahoma City TV station KOCO, say athletic director Mike Holder has offered Ford the position.

UMass extended Ford's contract through the 2014-15 season following the 2006-07 campaign, when the Minutemen won a share of the Atlantic 10's regular season title.

The Minutemen completed a 25-11 season in 2007-08 with a loss to Ohio State in the NIT title game earlier this month. In three years at UMass, Ford has a record of 62-35 with two NIT appearances.

Ford, a 1994 graduate of Kentucky, has also been a head coach at Eastern Kentucky of the Ohio Valley Conference and NAIA Campbellsville University. At Eastern Kentucky, he guided the Colonels to a mark of 61-80 with an NCAA Tournament appearance in his final season of 2004-05.

Oklahoma State needs a replacement for Sean Sutton, who resigned under pressure after two years on the job.

Sutton, who had three years remaining on his contract, guided the Cowboys to a record of 39-29 after taking over for his father, Eddie Sutton. Oklahoma State finished this past season with a record of 17-16, losing to Southern Illinois in the first round of the NIT.

The Cowboys made two NIT appearances in the younger Sutton's two seasons at the helm, losing to Marist in the first round of the 2007 tourney.
