NCAA Game Summary - New Hampshire At Connecticut

POSTED: 10:42 pm EST December 18, 2005

Rudy Gay scored 22 points to lead the second-ranked Connecticut Huskies to an 86-44 rout of the New Hampshire Wildcats at the Hartford Civic Center.

Marcus Johnson added 20 points, Rashad Anderson chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds, and Ed Nelson contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies (8-0), who have won their last four games by double-digit margins.

Blagoj Janev led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 5-of-7 on three-pointers for the Wildcats (2-8), who have lost their last three and five of their last six games.

The Huskies scored the first eight points of the game to take control. The Wildcats cut the lead to five points after Jermaine Anderson hit two free throws to make it a 10-5 game with 13:11 left in the first half.

However, Jeff Adrien put in a layup on Connecticut's next possession to spark an 18-2 run capped off by a Rashad Anderson three-pointer with 7:15 left in the half to make it a 28-7 contest.

The Huskies steadily increased their lead through the remainder of the half and had a 42-15 lead going into the locker room.

"The game wasn't a very pretty game," said UConn coach Jim Calhoun. "I thought we did a really good job, to be very honest with you. I'm actually coming away feeling pleased because we set a mode, as opposed to, like, Army where we tried to really force the issue."

Connecticut continued to dominate the game during the second half of play and led by as much as 43 points in the contest.

"Obviously, they're a heck of a basketball team," said Wildcats coach Bill Herrion. "We knew that coming in. We just wanted to give ourselves a chance. If you're going to even stay close with a team like this, you have to make shots."
