Tuesday, December 27, 2005

Marcelus Kemp scored 15 points and Nick Fazekas added 14 to lead 20th-ranked Nevada past Norfolk State, 56-46, at Lawlor Events Center.

Fazekas also had six rebounds and Denis Ikovlev and Mo Charlo chipped in six points apiece for the Wolf Pack (9-1), who continued their best start since the 1978-79 squad won 10 of its first 11 games.

Charlo and Kyle Shiloh each had seven rebounds as Nevada won its third straight game.

Tynell Dunkley netted nine points and five rebounds as no Norfolk State player reached double figures in scoring. Tony Murphy and Keith Young each had eight points for the Spartans (2-9), who saw their losing streak reach five games.

Trailing 4-3, Nevada used an 8-0 run to extend to an 11-4 edge 6:23 into the game. Dunkley netted two free throws for Norfolk State before Fazekas' layup ignited a 10-0 Wolf Pack run to make it a 21-6 game with 3:48 left in the half.

The Spartans scored six of the final nine points in the first frame to pull to within 26-14 at the break.

Down 30-14, Norfolk State used a 13-2 spurt, capped by two consecutive three- pointers by Young, to pull within 32-27 with 11:43 left in the second half.

The Spartans failed to get any closer though as Nevada went on a 12-3 run to go ahead 44-30. Kemp scored eight points during the spurt.

Five straight points by Murphy later cut the Wolf Pack lead to 52-42 with 1:58 remaining in the game, but four straight Nevada points ended any comeback thoughts.
