North Carolina A&T (5-6) At (22) Miami-Florida (11-0)
GAME NOTES: The undefeated Miami-Florida Hurricanes are clearly favored at home today against the North Carolina A&T Aggies. NC A&T has lost two straight games and four of the last five to fall to 5-6 overall. The Aggies are 1-5 in true road games this year and are coming off an 88-70 setback at Akron, as four of their five true road losses have come by 18 or more points. As for Miami, it has won its first 11 games this season and needs just three more victories without a loss to match the best start in school history. The Hurricanes are coming off an 85-63 romp over North Florida, the fourth double-digit triumph in the last five outings. Miami has won both of its previous meeting with North Carolina A&T, including an 87-62 romp over the Aggies in the most recent meeting in 2005.
Steven Rush is the leading scorer for NC A&T, as he is netting 16.8 ppg despite his 35.8 percent shooting from the floor. The only other double-digit scorer for the Aggies is Jason Wills, as he is posting 11.9 ppg to go along with 7.7 rpg. Wills is connecting on 51.1 percent of his field goal attempts, as he has clearly been much more efficient at the offensive end than his higher scoring teammate. NC A&T is posting 78.1 ppg while allowing 77.6 ppg to the opposition. Rush posted 18 points against Akron on Wednesday, but that effort simply wasn't enough to keep the Aggies competitive in that tilt. Austin Ewing poured in 14 points in the contest, while Wills and Thomas Coleman contributed 11 points each. North Carolina A&T shot 52 percent from the field but turned the ball over 18 times and missed 11 of its 23 free throws.
Miami is scoring 75.5 ppg this season on the strength of its outstanding 45.8 percent shooting from three-point range. Defensively, the club is holding the opposition to 58.4 ppg on 36.3 percent efficiency from the field. The Hurricanes are pulling down 7.7 rpg, an obvious key to their unblemished start. Jack McClinton leads a balanced offensive attack with 14.1 ppg, and he is shooting a tremendous 55.3 percent from three-point range. James Dews adds 11.4 ppg to the mix, and Brian Asbury checks in with 10.2 ppg. McClinton and Dwayne Collins scored 13 points apiece for Miami in the romp over North Florida on Thursday, and Collins also had 11 rebounds. Asbury, Dews and Lance Hurdle all scored 11 points for the Hurricanes, while Raymond Hicks rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. Miami nailed 10-of-18 three-pointers, another spectacular performance from behind the arc.
It is hard to imagine Miami keep up its blistering pace from three-point range. Still, even if the club does come back to Earth a bit, its perimeter shooting will still be tremendous. Expect McClinton and company to dominate the Aggies.
