Charleston, SC -- (Sports Network) - Kyle Hines poured in 20 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and swatted five shots, as the UNC-Greensboro Spartans conquered the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a 63-46 upset to advance to the Southern Tournament semifinals. Kendall Toney tallied 10 points for the Spartans (19-11), who will clash with No. 25 Davidson in the semifinal round on Sunday. Ben Stywall added nine points and grabbed eight boards, as UNC-Greensboro notched its fifth consecutive victory overall. The Spartans improved to 10-9 all-time in the conference tournament. Jeremy Clayton contributed 13 points and reeled in seven rebounds for Appalachian State (18-13), which bowed out after sharing the North Division crown with Chattanooga, thus earning a first-round bye. Kellen Brand provided 12 points, as the Spartans have dropped five of their last seven outings. Eduardo Bermudez chipped in with seven points while cleaning up seven boards, four on the offensive glass. UNC-Greensboro and Appalachian State split a pair of meetings during the regular season, and, after Saturday's showdown, ASU is clinging to a 15-14 edge in the all-time series. The Spartans trailed 16-15 in the first frame before ripping off a 13-0 run to take control of the contest. Toney highlighted the burst with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, and his jumper put UNC-Greensboro on top, 28-16, with 1:26 left until the break. The Mountaineers managed to cut the deficit to seven points before heading to the locker room, and Appalachian State was down 28-21 at halftime. After the recess, Hines had his way with the Mountaineers. At one point, the star forward netted 13 straight Spartans points, and continually came up with a response anytime Appalachian State attempted to close the gap. Though they came within six points on several occasions, the Mountaineers were outscored 35-25 in the second stanza, as the Spartans pulled away in the final minutes.
