Portland State Wins Big Sky

Thursday, March 13, 2008

(Sports Network) - Deonte Huff had 17 points and seven rebounds, as Portland State beat Northern Arizona, 67-51, to capture its first Big Sky Conference Tournament championship and its first trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Kyle Coston scored 14 points and Andre Murray added 13 for the top-seeded Vikings (23-9), who enter the Big Dance having won five in a row. Jeremiah Dominguez tallied nine points and dished out six assists in the win.

"I'm just real happy and proud of the kids on the team," Portland State coach Ken Bone said. "I know how much goes into having a championship program. It's not just the kids in the program, (it's the) administration, assistant coaches, strength coach. Everybody's played a big part in helping Portland State basketball get to this point."

Nate Geiser poured in a team-high 13 points for the second-seeded Lumberjacks (21-11), who made their third consecutive trip to the championship game. Kyle Landry had 10 points and 11 boards, while Josh Wilson ended with eight points, six boards and five assists.

"I truly believed Portland State was the best team in the conference this year and they showed it this evening," Northern Arizona coach Mike Adras said. "I am not sure that we played our best basketball tonight. They (Vikings) came out of the gates and grabbed a hold of this ball game."

The Vikings, who never trailed in the game, led 14-8 early on following a three-pointer from Coston, but Matt Johnson completed a rare four-point play to tie the score at 16 with 12:03 left in the first half.

Portland State ended the frame on a 18-4 run and carried a 34-20 advantage into halftime.

Zarko Comagic's layup cut the deficit to single digits, 40-31, with just over 13 minutes to go in regulation, but the Vikings' margin stretched to 55-38 after Julius Thomas converted a pair from the foul line.

Northern Arizona put together one last surge, rattling eight straight points to make it 55-46, but it was not enough, as Portland State secured the win from the charity stripe.
