NCAA Game Summary - Oakland At Xavier

Thursday, November 29, 2007

(Sports Network) - Josh Duncan led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds, while five different Musketeers scored in double-figures, helping 23rd-ranked Xavier University tame the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies, 93-68.

Stanley Burrell dropped in 17 points for Xavier (5-1), with Derrick Brown adding 15 points and eight boards. Drew Lavender did a little of everything, scoring 12 points, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing six assists, and coming up with three steals.

"Stanley Burrell has become an excellent defender," Xavier coach Sean Miller said. "Tonight he set the tone for our team. He is a total team guy right now, and our team benefits from that."

For Oakland (2-4), Johnathon Jones contributed 17 points to go with four assists. Shane Lawal put up 16 points, five rebounds, and swatted six shots. Derick Nelson scored 14 with five rebounds and five assists.

The closest Oakland was able to get within the Musketeers down the stretch was 21, when a pair of free-throws by Nelson with 1:45 left in the game made it 89-68.

OU only committed 12 turnovers to Xavier's 14, but the difference in the game came on the Musketeers 50.8 percent shooting from the field. The Golden Grizzlies were also out-rebounded, 46-25.

The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening minutes after a fastbreak layup by Lawal. However, it was the only time Oakland was on top during the game.

The Musketeers ran off a 9-0 streak, capped by a three-pointer from the top of the arc by Duncan with 16:51 to play in the half. Xavier never let up after that.

A 13-0 XU run made it 51-25 at 3:17, finished off when Dante Jackson drained a three on a fastbreak.

OU showed signs of life heading into the locker rooms, with an 8-0 run to close the half and cut the lead to 51-33. Erik Kangas nailed a three-pointer with eight seconds to play, ending the first half scoring.

Xavier wasted no time re-affirming its dominance out of the break. The Musketeers opened the second half with a 12-0 run, sealed when B.J. Raymond sank a three with 16:15 remaining, giving XU a very comfortable thirty-point cushion, 63-33.
