NCAA Game Summary - Oregon Vs. Oakland

Auburn Hills, MI -- (Sports Network) - Derick Nelson netted 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Oakland Golden Grizzlies knocked off the 23rd-ranked Oregon Ducks, 68-62, at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Johnathon Jones and Erik Kangas each contributed 12 points for the Golden Grizzlies (6-6), who defeated a ranked opponent for the first time in school history. Joevan Catron and Malik Hairston both had 15 points for the Ducks (8-3), who have lost their last two games. Trailing by four points, Oakland jumped in front after Brandon Cassise completed a three-point play and Nelson followed with a driving layup to give his team a 53-52 advantage with about 7 1/2 minutes to go. The Golden Grizzlies continued to run in front and scored the next seven points after a Hairston layup to extend their lead to 60-54 with under five minutes remaining. Consecutive three-point shots by Bryce Taylor and Tajuan Porter tied the game at 60 with just over three minutes to go. Nelson and Jones responded for Oakland as both hit two shots each from the charity stripe to take a four-point lead. Neither team scored until a free throw by Nelson made it 65-60 with 46 seconds left. Catron answered at the other end for Oregon to pull his team within three points, but the Golden Grizzlies hit their free throws in the final seconds to seal the victory. With the game tied near the mid-way point of the first half, Oakland took control and used a 16-5 run to take a 28-17 advantage with about five minutes to go. After a free throw by Nelson, the Golden Grizzlies went into halftime up 37-26. The Ducks opened the second half with a 13-2 run to tie the game at 39-39 about three minutes into the stanza. Maarty Leunen sunk two shots from beyond the arc during the surge. Things went back-and-forth until Oakland took control down the stretch.Game Notes:This game marked the first-ever meeting between Oregon and Oakland on the hardwood...The Golden Grizzlies have won two straight...Leunen ended with 12 points and 12 rebounds in defeat.
