NCAA Game Summary - Oral Roberts Vs. Pittsburgh

POSTED: 6:40 pm EDT March 20, 2008

(Sports Network) - Levance Fields scored 23 points and Sam Young added 14, leading Pittsburgh to an easy 82-63 victory over Oral Roberts in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Gilbert Brown and Keith Benjamin chipped in 12 points apiece, and Ronald Ramon contributed 10 for the Panthers (27-9), who won the Big East Tournament and received the fourth seed in the South Region. Pittsburgh, which has won six straight, will face fifth-seeded Michigan State in second round on Saturday. The Spartans disposed of Temple, 72-61, in the first game of the day at the Pepsi Center.

DeJuan Blair grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for Pittsburgh, which dominated the boards by a 50-33 margin. Fields, meanwhile, had seven assists and just two turnovers.

"We knew how good a team Oral Roberts was, a very experienced team," said Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon. "We're very proud of how we played, especially early. We were about as efficient as we could be. Our perimeter was very good. We really executed and took good shots."

Robert Jarvis scored 16 points and Andre Hardy added 15 for Oral Roberts (24-9), which earned its third straight NCAA bid by again capturing the title of the Summit League -- formerly the Mid-Continent Conference. The Golden Eagles still haven't won an NCAA Tournament game since 1974, having lost first-round games to Washington State and Memphis each of the previous two years.

"We've played some great teams the last two years in the tournament," said ORU head coach Scott Sutton. "I think this is the best team we played."

Oral Roberts led for most of the game's first eight minutes and a Jarvis three-pointer gave the Golden Eagles a 13-10 edge. It was all Pitt from there.

Fields answered with a three-pointer and added a bucket on the next possession to give the Panthers the lead for good. It also kick-started a run of 18 straight points.

After a layup by Blair gave Pittsburgh a 28-13 lead, Hardy hit a pair of free throws to end Oral Roberts' lengthy drought with 6 1/2 minutes to play in the opening half.

Fields, though, followed with another shot from beyond the arc, as the Panthers continued to cruise. They led by as many as 25 points before heading into the break with a 47-24 cushion, thanks to 16 points from Fields.

"We took good shots," said Fields. "They went down for me. When you see the ball go down [in the hoop], it gives you confidence."

Oral Roberts had confidence early, making four shots in the first eight minutes, but hit just three the rest of the half to finish 7-of-28 from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Pitt shot 47.2 percent and held a 25-11 edge on the glass.

The Panthers breezed through the second half, leading by as many as 26. Oral Roberts got as close as 16, as back-to-back layups by Hardy and Shawn King made it a 69-53 game with 6 1/2 minutes remaining, but Pitt responded with seven straight points to end any thoughts of a miracle comeback.

Pittsburgh is making its seventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance, but hasn't advanced past the third round in the previous six years. Last year, the Panthers were eliminated in the regional semifinals by UCLA.

Game Notes:

Blair added eight points to his rebound total...King scored 10 points for Oral Roberts, while Moses Ehambe had 13...Pitt finished the contest shooting 46.4 percent, while Oral Roberts connected on 34.9 percent from the field...This was the first-ever meeting between the schools.
