(1-4) Prairie View Vs. Chattanooga (2-3)
GAME NOTES: A pair of schools meeting for the first time ever collide in the final round of the Las Vegas Invitational today, as the Chattanooga Mocs fight it out with the Prairie View Panthers from Orleans Arena. The Mocs enter the game 1-2 in this event after dropping a heart-breaking 56-55 decision to Towson in Las Vegas last night. Chattanooga, which opened the tournament with a loss at top-ranked Florida (93-44) and a win at Ball State (70-55), now stands at 2-3 on the young season. As for Prairie View, it has lost in all three rounds of the tournament, including a 60-49 setback to Tennessee State yesterday. Although the team lost once again, the performance was much better than the one it put forth in the first two rounds against Ball State (65-48) and Florida (94-33). Still at 1-4 overall, the Panthers have a lot of work ahead of them to improve.
The Panthers made only 28.8 percent of their shots from the field, including a dismal 3-of-24 effort from long range, in their 11-point setback to Tennessee State yesterday. The team committed 16 turnovers in the contest and was also dominated on the boards 53-29. With just nine point, Chris Gaines was the team's top scorer in the loss. On the year, Prairie View has no players averaging double figures and that isn't really surprising considering the team is netting only 48.0 ppg as a whole. The main reason for the low output has been poor shooting, as the Panthers are hitting on just 31.5 percent of their shots from the field this season.
The Mocs shot just 36.2 percent from the floor and allowed Towson's Gary Neal to convert a layup with just under eight seconds left of their one-point loss last night. Chattanooga only has itself to blame, as the team committed 20 costly turnovers in the loss. Keddric Mays was the only player on the team to score in double figures with 13 points. On the year, Mays is also tops on the squad with 15.2 ppg on the strength of 43.4 percent shooting from long range. Nicchaeus Doaks, who was held to just seven points last game, is next in line with 13.6 ppg behind 62.5 percent shooting from the floor.
Chattanooga is coming off a tough loss, but it should be able to rebound nicely against a Prairie View club that doesn't appear to be clicking at the moment.
