Penn (12-18) At Princeton (6-22)
GAME NOTES: The Penn Quakers and the Princeton Tigers wrap up their respective campaigns tonight, as they battle in Ivy League play at Jadwin Gym. After winning three straight Ancient Eight titles, the Quakers took a few steps back this season and will finish no better than third place. The team though, enters the tilt on a high note, as it captured a 69-67 win over Columbia on Saturday. With the outcome, Penn snapped a short two-game slide and improved to 12-18 overall and 7-6 within the league. As for Princeton, it finished a league-worst 2-12 last season, but things seemed on the rise after a 2-0 start to this year's Ivy League campaign. The Tigers, however, fell on tough times after that fast start, losing 10 of their last 11 outings. On Saturday, the team was downed by conference champion Cornell, 71-64, dropping it to a dismal 6-22 overall. With regard to the head-to-head series, Penn owns a 120-97 advantage over Princeton and it has won the last three meetings.
Tyler Bernardini hit a jumper with 0.6 seconds remaining, lifting Penn to a dramatic 69-67 win over Columbia this past weekend. It was quite a finish for the Quakers and Bernardini, who scored 15 points in the contest. Kevin Egee led the way with 16 points and five rebounds, while Brian Grandieri had 11 points and six boards. Penn shot just 39.3 percent from the field, but it made up for that by going 6-of-14 from downtown and 19-of-25 at the charity stripe. For the season, the Quakers are hitting on 43.0 percent of their attempts from the floor, helping them to average 67.9 ppg. Grandieri tops the roster in scoring at 13.3 ppg and he is also pulling down a team-high 5.8 rpg. Bernardini has provided a nice complement to him, posting 13.0 ppg on the strength of 39.8 percent shooting from three-point range.
The Tigers allowed Cornell to make good on 51.9 percent of its attempts from the field and 9-of-21 from long distance, and suffered a 71-64 setback over the weekend. Princeton itself shot 41.4 percent from the floor, including a 10-of-28 showing from beyond the arc, but that wasn't good enough. Kareem Maddox guided the team in defeat with 16 points, while Nick Lake finished with 15 points of his own. The Tigers once again played without leading scorer Zach Finley, who has been hampered by a knee injury. Finley averages 10.1 ppg and 4.5 rpg for the season, but he is listed as questionable for tonight. Noah Savage at 10.0 ppg is the only player on the roster currently scoring in double figures. As a team, the Tigers are netting a mere 58.1 ppg and that isn't a big surprise considering the patient attack Princeton has become known for over the years.
Penn is simply the better team here and it should be able to escape Jadwin Gym with a victory over its rival tonight.
