NCAA Game Summary - Villanova At Providence

Sunday, March 9, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Villanova Wildcats went to the Dunkin' Donuts Center and escaped with a 73-63 victory over the Providence Friars, as Dwayne Anderson led the way with 17 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in the Big East Conference matchup.

Scottie Reynolds and Shane Clark each netted 10 points for 'Nova (19-11, 9-9 BE), while Corey Stokes chipped in 13 points off the bench. Dante Cunningham also got involved with 10 rebounds to go along with seven points.

Randall Hanke paced the Friars (15-15, 6-12) with a game-high 18 points and six rebounds, while Jeff Xavier and Weyinmi Efejuku netted 14 points apiece. Efejuku also added seven rebounds, five steals and four assists in the losing effort.

The Wildcats managed seven more field goal attempts in the first half, as their 12-for-29 effort from the floor was good enough for a 34-28 lead at intermission.

The Friars held Villanova to just eight field goals in the second half, but the Wildcats managed to get to the free-throw line with frequency (19-of-24) and wrap up their regular season on a high note with the 10-point victory.

Providence shot better from the field, but was beaten at the free throw line, where the 'Cats sunk 25-of-31 attempts compared to just 10-of-15 from the Friars.

Providence now must rely on a DePaul loss to Pittsburgh tomorrow in order to qualify for the Big East Conference Tournament.
