POSTED: 10:39 pm EDT March 18, 2008

(Sports Network) - Sean Singletary scored 18 points to lead the Virginia Cavaliers to a 66-64 victory over the Richmond Spiders in the opening round of the inaugural College Basketball Invitational at John Paul Jones Arena.

Mamadi Diane and Jamil Tucker added 15 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench in the win for Virginia (16-15).

Dan Geroit posted a game-high 22 points to lead Richmond (16-15), while David Gonzalvez tallied 13 in the losing effort. Kevin Anderson chipped in 11 points for the Spiders.

Both clubs shot at a 44.0 percent clip during the first half, but Richmond managed to take a slim 33-31 lead into the break with a 9-of-10 effort from the charity stripe.

The Cavaliers connected on 50.0 percent of their attempts from the field during the second stanza to take the two-point victory.

Virginia finished the contest with a 33-25 rebounding advantage, overshadowing the fact that the team had just seven assists against 17 turnovers.

The Cavaliers advance to face Old Dominion in the quarterfinals on Monday.
