Rutgers Gives Men's Basketball Coach Hill Two-Year Extension

POSTED: 9:23 pm EDT May 29, 2008

(Sports Network) - Despite little recent on-court success, and on the heels of bringing in a heralded recruiting class, Rutgers gave head men's basketball coach Fred Hill a two-year contract extension.

Hill's contract now runs through the 2012-2013 season, and all terms and conditions of the deal remain the same.

"Freddie's passion for Rutgers University, his student athletes, and the state of New Jersey is genuine and tangible," said director of athletics Robert E. Mulcahy III. "I am very proud to re-affirm our commitment to him. We look forward to the realization of the goals he has set forth for this program."

Those goals begin and end with a plethora of talent heading to New Brunswick's campus this fall. The recruiting class includes four nationally rated scholastic prospects and the first McDonald's All-American, Mike Rosario, in the program's history.

The recruiting class comes after an up-and-down 11-20 campaign that included back-to-back victories over nationally ranked conference foes Villanova and Pittsburgh.

"There is no other program that I would rather be coaching basketball at than Rutgers, our state university. This is home," said Hill. "I am extremely grateful for the confidence that Rutgers University has shown in me."

Hill became the 16th head coach in school history in March 2006. Before manning the big seat with the Scarlet Knights, Hill had been a career-long assistant with stints at Villanova, Seton Hall and a job as associate head coach to Gary Waters, the man he replaced at Rutgers.

Hill's father, Fred Hill, Sr., is the long-time baseball coach at Rutgers.
