Texas Southern (1-9) Vs. Wofford (5-4)
GAME NOTES: Following one of the most exciting wins in recent team history, the Wofford Terriers now face the Texas Southern Tigers as part of the Las Vegas Classic at Orleans Arena this afternoon. Snapping a brief two-game slide, the Terriers also picked up their very first true road win of the 2007-08 on Wednesday night when they slipped by the Purdue Boilermakers by a score of 69-66. The victory was the fifth of the season for Wofford and definitely overshadowed the squad's triumphs versus the likes of Lees-McRae, Virginia Wise and Toccoa Falls. As for the Tigers, they're suffering through one of the longest losing streaks in the nation at the moment, now numbering nine in a row since the team opened the season with a 72-64 victory versus Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The team most recently faced off against Iowa State on Wednesday night and was toppled in a 79-55 final, marking the fourth straight game the team has failed to reach at least 60 points. With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, this is the first-ever meeting.
Against Iowa State earlier this week the Tigers managed to shoot just 33.9 percent from the field, all while allowing the Cyclones to convert 50 percent from the floor. Sollie Norwood led the way for the visitors with 19 points, hitting a respectable 5-of-10 behind the three-point line but 7-of-17 from the floor overall. Kevin Abanobi chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds as he hung in for all 40 minutes. Having gone through 10 games, the only regular who is averaging double-digit scoring is Norwood with his 16.9 ppg, adding close to four and a half rebounds per game as well. Norwood is shooting just 39.4 percent from the floor and has a mere nine assists as well at the moment. Abanobi (7.1 ppg) checks in with a team-best 5.7 rpg and has logged seven of their 13 blocked shots to this point in the campaign as well.
Down by three points with just 1:22 to play at Mackey Arena on Wednesday night, the Terriers closed out the meeting with Purdue on a 6-0 run to capture the huge road win. As part of the Las Vegas Classic played at local sites, Junior Salters led the attack with his 13 points on 3-of-4 shooting behind the three- point line, while Matt Estep and Shane Nichols recorded 11 and 10 points, respectively. Adding to his eight-point performance, Drew Gibson handed out a career-high 13 of the unit's 17 assists. The team leader with 35 assists, more than twice the number of any of his teammates, Gibson also leads the unit with 11.1 ppg, despite shooting only 39.3 percent from the field. Salters checks in with 10.2 ppg and Nichols, who has played only four games, another 15.8 ppg. The top man on the glass with seven boards per outing, Noah Dahlman has managed just 6.4 ppg due to the fact that he's made only 12-of-25 at the free-throw line for a team shooting a collective 61.3 percent at the stripe thus far.
While even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while, Texas Southern is no such animal and will be hard-pressed to stay close to the Terriers considering the high on which Wofford is riding at the moment.
